Broadway’s ‘Small Mouth Sounds’ to Welcome Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd and Sarah Paulson

Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson and Martin Freeman are among the actors set to lead the Broadway premiere of Bess Wohl’s “Small Mouth Sounds” in 2027.

The cast also includes Greta Lee and Isaac Powell.  Joe Mantello will direct the production, which begins preview performances February 18 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Opening night is scheduled for March 18.

Roberts will play Joan, with Rudd as Ned, Paulson as Judy, Freeman as Jan, Lee as Alicia and Powell as Rodney. 

The production will mark Roberts’ first Broadway appearance in more than 20 years. She made her Broadway debut in the 2006 production of “Three Days of Rain” alongside Rudd and Bradley Cooper. Mantello also directed that production, making “Small Mouth Sounds” a reunion for Roberts, Rudd and the director. The production will mark Freeman’s Broadway debut.

Set at a silent spiritual retreat, “Small Mouth Sounds” follows six strangers who travel to the woods hoping to escape their problems and transform their lives. Their efforts are complicated as personalities clash, emotional baggage surfaces and unexpected relationships begin to form.

“Small Mouth Sounds” premiered Off-Broadway at Ars Nova in 2015 under the direction of Rachel Chavkin. It returned for another Off-Broadway engagement at the Pershing Square Signature Center the following year and has since been staged in cities including Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Santa Monica.

The creative team includes scenic designer Chloe Lamford, costume designer An D’Huys, lighting designer Jack Knowles and sound designer Tom Gibbons. Caroline Shaw will provide music, with movement by JA Collective.
