‘& Juliet’ Adds Aly Michalka and Spencer Sutherland for Limited Broadway Runs

Aly Michalka and Spencer Sutherland are heading to Broadway, with both performers set to join the cast of “& Juliet” for limited engagements at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Sutherland will take over the role of Romeo beginning September 15, while Michalka will join the production as Anne starting November 3. The appearances will mark Broadway debuts for both performers.

Michalka, known for her work as one half of the musical duo Aly & AJ, said she was excited to bring her experience in music, television and film to the stage.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the company of & Juliet as Anne Hathaway,” Michalka said in a statement. “I’ve spent so much of my life performing and telling stories through music, film, and television, and the opportunity to bring that experience to a Broadway stage while challenging myself in a new way is incredibly exciting.”

Sutherland will arrive on Broadway following the success of his 2024 album The Drama and multiple tours.

“Stepping onto the biggest stage as Romeo is more than a dream come true, it’s a moment that I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” Sutherland said. “A Broadway debut only happens once, and this is very much a ‘pinch me’ moment.”

The production also announced several returning cast members. Jeannette Bayardelle will reprise the role of Angelique from September 15 through October 4. Original Broadway company member Megan Kane will return from September 7, 2026, through January 3, 2027, while Elsa Keefe takes a leave of absence.

The current cast includes Gianna Harris as Juliet, Paulo Szot and Joey Fatone alternating as Lance, Alison Luff as Anne, Corey Mach as Shakespeare, Michael Iván Carrier as May, Chrissy Metz as Angélique and Liam Pearce as Romeo.

“& Juliet” opened on Broadway in November 2022 and reached its 1,500th performance at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on June 23.

The musical received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. Written by David West Read, the production reimagines the ending of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” by exploring what Juliet’s life could have looked like if she had survived.
