‘Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)’ to Close on Broadway

“Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)” will play its final Broadway performance November 29 at the Longacre Theatre.

The romantic comedy musical will have completed 21 previews and 428 regular performances by the time it closes. Performances began November 1, 2025, ahead of an official opening on November 20.

Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts lead the two-person production as Dougal and Robin. Both actors received Tony Award nominations for their performances, while the show earned eight nominations overall, including Best Musical.

In a statement announcing the closing, the producers called “Two Strangers” “an incredibly special, original piece of storytelling” and described its Broadway arrival as a risk that found a receptive audience.

“Bringing this show to Broadway was a leap of faith,” the producers said, adding that “audiences met us with open arms.”

The producers also thanked the musical’s cast, crew and creative team for their work at the Longacre Theatre. Although the Broadway production is ending, the show is expected to continue with a previously announced national tour launching in Providence, Rhode Island, in fall 2027.

“We cannot wait to tour this spectacular production” across the country, the producers said. Casting, dates and additional cities have not yet been announced.

Written and composed by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, the musical follows Dougal, an optimistic British traveler who arrives in New York to attend the wedding of the father he has never met. Robin, the bride’s guarded sister, is assigned to collect him from John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Tim Jackson directed and choreographed the Broadway production. The creative team also includes scenic and costume designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer Tony Gayle and orchestrator Lux Pyramid. Nick Finlow serves as music supervisor, with Ted Arthur as music director.

Pitts and Tutty previously played Robin and Dougal during the musical’s North American premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That engagement ran from May 20 through July 13, 2025.

The show’s history began in England, where an earlier version titled “The Season” was produced by Royal & Derngate Northampton and New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. The musical was later developed through the Stiles and Drewe MTI Mentorship Award.

Retitled “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),” the production opened at London’s Kiln Theatre in November 2023. Its sold-out run led to a West End transfer at the Criterion Theatre, where it played from April 4 through August 31, 2024.
