Patti LuPone to Return to New York Stage in Off-Broadway’s ‘Full Gallop’

Patti LuPone will return to the New York stage as fashion editor Diana Vreeland in a new Off-Broadway production of “Full Gallop.”

The one-woman play will begin previews January 8, 2027, at New York City Center’s Stage II. Opening night is scheduled for January 17, with the production set for a strictly limited 12-week engagement.

Gordon Greenberg will direct the play, which was written by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson. Additional members of the creative team have not yet been announced.

“Full Gallop” takes place after Vreeland is dismissed as editor-in-chief of Vogue. Returning to New York following several months in Europe, she considers her career, influence and the question of how to reinvent herself following a major professional setback.

The production’s announcement positions Vreeland as a predecessor to fashion editors who later became widely recognized cultural figures: “Before Anna, before Miranda, there was Diana.”

“Full Gallop” received its world premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 1995. Wilson, who co-wrote the play, originated the role of Vreeland under the direction of Nicholas Martin.

The production later moved to Manhattan Theatre Club’s Stage II, the same space where LuPone will perform the revival. Its initial New York engagement was followed by an extended Off-Broadway run at the Westside Theatre.

The play has since received productions across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Its return to City Center places the solo work back in its original New York venue more than three decades after its first engagement there.

LuPone’s most recent Broadway appearance was opposite Mia Farrow in “The Roommate” in 2024. Her other recent stage roles include Joanne in the Broadway revival of “Company,” for which she received her third Tony Award.

The actor’s previous Tony wins came for playing Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of “Evita” and Rose in the 2008 revival of “Gypsy.” Her extensive New York credits also include “War Paint,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Anything Goes,” “Master Class,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “The Robber Bridegroom.”

LuPone has also appeared on television in “Agatha All Along,” “Palm Royale,” “Pose,” “Penny Dreadful,” “American Horror Story,” “30 Rock” and “Life Goes On.”
